14mm Lens

The 14mm super wide angle lens I carry in my gear bag is certainly my least used lens. But, its expansion of space between elements in the scene and pronounced keystoning effect can create some very unique images. This image provides a good example of these characteristics. I made this photograph from the boat ramp at Lake Hickson in the Dagmar Wildlife Management Area. While the foreground trees appear to be a significant distance from where I was set up, they were, in fact, no more than 20 feet away. In addition, while the tree in the center of the shot is standing straight, the remaining trees appear to lean toward the center of the frame. This is the keystoning effect inherent in all wide and super-wide angle lenses and becomes more pronounced as you get closer to the edges of the picture.  These effects are not always desirable in the final image, but knowing they occur can allow you to create some very interesting photographs. My settings were 1/13 sec, f/22, and 200 ISO.
