I headed out this morning to photograph the covered bridge that crosses the East Fork White Oak Bayou as it winds its way through Burns Park in North Little Rock, Arkansas.  The overcast sky provided smooth even lighting that reduced contrast levels in the scene; however, if included in the picture, it would appear as an extremely light and featureless area in the frame that would draw attention away from the subject.  The only way to overcome this challenge was to reduce or eliminate the sky from the picture.

In the image above, I lowered the camera until the sky was eliminated from the frame.  Lowering the camera had the added benefit of allowing me to capture the bridge’s reflection in the stream which adds a nice element to the scene.

In the picture below, I could not completely eliminate the sky, so I used the tree limb in the foreground and the trees in the background to reduce its overall impact on the composition.

Settings:  Canon 5D Mk II, 40mm, 1/8 sec., f/22
